Paleontology (PAT)

Section Information

Paleontology focuses on the study of past life on Earth through fossils, sedimentary records, and geological evidence. It examines the evolution, diversity, morphology, ecology, and extinction of ancient organisms, providing insights into long-term biological and environmental change.

Modern research in paleontology includes invertebrate and vertebrate paleontology, micropaleontology, paleoecology, taphonomy, biostratigraphy, paleoclimatology, evolutionary biology, and the use of advanced imaging and analytical techniques. Developments in geochronology, molecular methods, isotopic analysis, computational modeling, and statistical phylogenetics continue to enhance understanding of life’s history.

This section publishes field studies, fossil analyses, evolutionary research, paleoenvironmental reconstructions, quantitative models, and reviews addressing organismal evolution, ancient ecosystems, mass extinctions, climate–biosphere interactions, and fossil-based interpretations of Earth’s history.
