Geology (GEO)
Section Information
Geology focuses on the composition, structure, history, and dynamic processes of the Earth and other planetary bodies. It examines how rocks, minerals, sediments, and geologic structures form and evolve, and how internal and surface processes shape landscapes, resources, and environments over geologic time.
Modern research in geology includes mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, geochronology, paleontology, tectonics, volcanology, geomorphology, and Earth-system evolution. Advances in analytical geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing, field methods, and numerical modeling continue to deepen understanding of Earth processes and planetary history.
This section publishes field studies, laboratory analyses, theoretical models, reviews, and applied research that address rock formation, crustal evolution, sedimentary environments, tectonic processes, paleobiology, and geologic hazards, as well as applications in natural resources, environmental geology, and planetary science.
